This chapter tells how David was moved to number Israel against Joab's counsel, how the Lord sent a plague upon the people in judgment, and how David bought the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite and built an altar there, where the plague was stopped.

ThomsonAnd David said to Orna, By no means: for I must buy them for their worth in money. For I cannot take what are thine for the Lord, to offer a whole burnt offering to the Lord at free cost.

BrentonAnd king David said to Orna, Nay; for I will surely buy it for its worth in money: for I will not take thy property for the Lord, to offer a whole-burnt-offering to the Lord without cost to myself.
